5 Reasons Pinterest Is Better For Ecommerce Than Social Media

Updated: Mar 2, 2022

Running an e-commerce business certainly has its perks! But is social media marketing one of them?.... Yes and no.

The monolith that is Facebook and Instagram advertising is making it harder and harder to get your products in front of the customers that actually want to buy what you're selling...would you prefer a way that's more likely to bring in customers that are ready and willing to buy?

You're nodding your head yes. Let me explain.

If you've been living under a rock for the past 10 years (no judgment; rocks are great!), you might not know what Pinterest is. It is basically a huge vision board that users fill with their "pins" from the web – other people's (or business's) ideas, products, pictures, sayings, charts, etc...

Users can see your pins and pin your pins, and then those pins become pinned on and on until there's this beautiful sharing of ideas … le sigh… how beautiful the internet can be!

But I digress.

#1 - Pinterest has customers that are already looking to buy!

Pinterest marketing gets your ads in front of people who have a vision in mind and want to make that vision a reality! Pinterest is a place to be inspired, and people are looking for products that help with that inspiration! In fact, 82% of Pinterest’s active users say they have bought products based on branded content on the site! I mean, need I say more? Okay, if you insist...

#2 - Pinterest's management of ads

Facebook's ads algorithm is...well, it's a lot. And it changes a lot. Pinterest's ad management is so much simpler. It factors in what users search for, the accounts they already follow, and more to get them to your promoted pin. Though the ad spend may cost an inch more in the beginning, it won't take a mile to get where you want to go. And you'll actually be able to understand the process!

#3 - Pinterest users are actually positive about the site!

In light of recent studies coming to light about Instagram's detrimental effects on young women's self-esteem, isn't it just great to hear that 8 out of 10 users (let that sink in) feel positive about going on Pinterest? Compare that to the studies showing that most teens and college students feel less attractive, more unhappy, and less satisfied with their lives after using the app.

#4 - Pinterest operates like a search engine

Much like Google search results, when you pop a search term in Pinterest, such as, say, lighting fixtures, it's going to show you lighting fixtures. Facebook and Instagram, along with other social media platforms using that same model, are not built for this function. So, think of Pinterest as a Google that's pretty and friendly. It gets users to the products and ideas they want to build their next projects and visualize how they want their lives to look.

#5 - Pinterest content has a longer shelf-life - MY FAVORITE PART

A study performed by Wisemetrics shows that Pinterest content stays fresh longer than Facebook, Twitter and Instagram combined! The time it takes for a Facebook post to reach 50% of its views is 90 minutes. For Twitter, it's only 24 minutes. Pinterest is...drum roll, please...three and a half months! So while you may purchase an ad on Pinterest, the content you use is going to keep getting pinned and shared and stay on users' boards FOREVER. Well, forever may be a big word, but you get what I mean….
