You got products to sling and want to improve your chances of getting a straight shot? Well, saddle up pardner! It's time to round up some SEO keywords for Etsy! Yeehaw!
...No, I'm not sure why I'm using cowboy voice...going through a phase.
Ahem.
Let's start with the basics. If you already have an Etsy account, you know the drill. Each listing comes with sections for photos, a title, description, and tags. Along with that, you get your About Us section where you can describe your business to potential customers. These are valuable areas that you need to give some TLC because these all factor into how Etsy's algorithm displays your products in a customer's search results.
First off, we need to start with picking the right keywords.
Ever notice when you're on Etsy looking for stuff that you type in keywords to search for things in the search bar? Yes, we're all used to doing that by now, but so often, people trying to form a list of the right SEO keywords for their Etsy shop forget the common sense factors behind it all.
If you're searching for gold hoop earrings, are you going to search "gold hoop earrings for women in their 50s" or "gold hoop earrings to wear to a basketball game"? No, probably not. So don't use them on the backend, either. If you're selling gold hoop earrings, stick to the basics and think about what kinds of search terms you would actually use, even if you are a woman in your 50s who desperately wants a pair of gold hoop earrings to wear to the basketball game. You wouldn't type that all into the search bar would you? The term, "gold hoop earrings" with other relevant phrases such as "for wedding" or "for the club." Simple as that. Let's not get too weird with it.
Now, that being said, even though those may be common sense keywords, you want to find terms that are being searched frequently but within your own special niche. If you are selling gold hoop earrings, you'll want to pop up for searches like, "hoop earrings" and "gold earrings," but guess what? The more specific and relevant your keyword is, you're more likely to pop up in someone's search results and far more likely to actually convert someone to a sale.
So, it's really a balancing act to find keywords with a good search volume and relevance to your product. It will do you no good to pop up for a broad phrase for "women's jewelry," because you are competing with way too many other sellers. But if you use keywords like "gold art deco hoop earrings" (if that's what your product is) or some variation of that, you will definitely get more conversions.
Now where to find keywords. There are many SEO tools on the web that you can use for free and for pay. One specifically used for Etsy is eRank. You can also use tools like Google Trends to see what people are searching for currently.
Now, this brings up a good point. As you find keywords, you may see some that are only relevant to current events. If there's a popular meme, style, or new slang word the youths are saying, you may want to hop on these trends IF AND ONLY IF you have a product that is relevant to such trends. Sure, you can create a product just for that trend, but remember, you will need to stay on top of these things and keep your listings fresh! Remember: no one wants a "Deez Nuts" sticker anymore (okay, maybe someone does, but not enough to justify making them).
Also, staying on top of your listings improves your SEO ranking on Etsy, because Big Brother Etsy is watching what you do. It wants to send customers to your shop if you're converting them into clients, because it means more money for them, of course!
Now, back to searching for keywords. One really simple way to find keywords if you have some history as an Etsy seller is to look through your analytics on Etsy to see which keywords led to clicks, impressions, and conversions. This is valuable information so glean what you can from it to make the most of your Etsy SEO.
Once you have found your SEO keywords that you know are going to get you to the top of the search results, time to get strategic!
Here are some tips:
Put the best keywords at the front of your title and description. By best, I mean the most relevant, most specific to your product that will get you a sale if someone sees them.
Don't forget your Etsy tags. Use relevant keywords here and keep it up to date!
Use high-quality images on your listing! Follow Etsy's guidelines for images, and use text in the images to describe what the photo shows or state the product's important characteristics.
Use your keywords in your title and descriptions on your listings in a thoughtful way. If you are using the same keywords for every single listing, you're going to be competing with yourself to get to the front of Etsy's search results, and no one wants that! (It's like a Fight Club situation but with slinging crafts instead of punching faces.)
Use holiday or event-specific keywords to get in on gift-giving seasons like Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, etc. Do this a few weeks or months before a major holiday to grab those early bird people who can't wait to shop for their loved ones (Meanwhile, I'm currently getting the shakes thinking about Christmas…)
Now, with all this said, you've still got to battle the Etsy algorithm! Your fight is not over. But if you are a good seller, a kind seller, the kind of seller who pleases their customers, this makes Etsy very happy. You see, when you have good reviews (the more the better), all of your copyright and shop policies filled out, and a good conversion rate, Etsy will put you at the top of the search results for the keywords you chose. And that's great. But it may take time. And money: one last tip. If you pay to run ads on Etsy, this will more than likely increase your organic traffic and conversion rates, leading Etsy to place you higher on its totem pole.
Now with that, I'm heading out to that Wild Blue Yonder to lasso up some SEO keywords of my own. Git along now, and find yourself some goodies.
